The Midline and The Microcosmic Orbit

Okay, I feel like somewaht of an idiot for not figuring this out earlier, but here it goes. Question for all biodynamic cranial practitioners out there: Is the Midline the same as the Microcosmic Orbit?

Given that this is a forum for biodynamic craniosacral, I'm assuming that everyone knows what the Midline is, particularly since it has been discussed for decades by Jealous, Shea, Sills, etc. In brief, I understand it to be the energetic center from which we develope/organize embryologically, and still exists within us as adults. This is an obvious simplification.

I also assume many of us know what the Microcosmic orbit is, but, in brief, it is the circulation of Qi along the Governing vessel on the dorsal aspect of the body and through the conception vessel along the front.

I have been rereading some of Shea's stuff, where he is waxing poetic about the Midline, and I have practiced the Microcosmic orbit for years. These two phenomena seem so similar that I believe they are the same thing, however, after speaking to some fellow osteopaths, there is evidently some controversy about this. So, I put it out to you, the community (or at least, the community on this Tribe here); What are your thoughts and experiences on this?

Enjoy your day.

seeking out committed models in seattle to recieve soma body work

Family and Friends,

I am attending the Soma Institute of Neuromuscular Integration, studying a specific style of bodywork much different than other massage modalities. The program begins in late September 2007 and goes into February 2008. For the program I will need 4 models to work with as we go through the 11 session series together. I am hoping to have 4 committed models by the first week of September.
The commitment requires the model to attend every session for eleven weeks at the Soma Institute campus, with a $50 fee for each session.
Each model will keep the same scheduled time every week, the times offered are;
Saturdays: 10 am 1pm 330 pm
Sundays: 1 pm
Although the cost, time, and distance can seem like a hindrance, I assure you this opportunity is priceless for anyone interested in learning more about their body and the healing arts. The school is located 45 min. from Seattle in Buckley, at the foot of Mt. Rainier.
“Soma” is not massage. We are in the field of Structural Integration which includes Rolfing & Hellerwork. Structural Integration has a specific intent to aid the body back into an aligned position in relation to gravity. This is achieved by following a designed “recipe” in an 11 session series that helps guide the muscle and fascia from a place of past patterns of trauma and injury back to the naturally intended positioning. Photographs of before and after prove every time that the work “sticks” and the body moves into alignment even after the work has completed. As a model you will see changes in your body. And with the physical changes comes the potential for a host of life changes.
I will take the first 4 people who commit. If you yourself are not interested, or cannot work it, It would be of great help if you will pass it on to anyone who might really benefit from this opportunity. People who have not recieved 10-session work and/or those whom have chronic issues of any sort (scoliosis, asthma, arthritis, allergies, past injuries) are put at the top of the list because this is where we will most likely witness the greatest affects. This "list" though does not exclude anyone either.
Question regarding Sphenoid Bone and Large Intestine connection

Hello, All,

I have been rereading Milne's book, The Heart of Listening, and he mentions that there is an energetic connection between the acupuncture point, Large Intestine 10, and the sphenoid bone. He does not elaborate.

Does anyone out there have more infomation or background on this? Does anyone out there use this connection? As we are ever trying to expand our knowledge, I would appreciate any illumination that is out there.

Thank you,

For anyone that is intrigued by the field theory that is prevalent in biodynamic cranial studies (somewhat popularized by Jim Jealous, DO), I just found an interesting paper published in the International Journal of Developmental Biology. Here is the link:

http://www.ijdb.ehu.es/web/paper.php?doi=052044di

The article is by Donald E. Ingber, and he basically uses cell cultures to prove the theories put forth by the embryologist Bleischmitt at the turn of the century. I struggled through his book for months in Med school, never believing anyone would actually study his theories in a physical reality, so I'm pretty ampted up about this.

Thats just how nerdy I am. I hope this paper finds others who are just as nerdy.

Peace,

THE BASIS OF CHIROPRACTIC CRANIOPATHY

This is an article by Dr. Nelson DeCamp on Chiropractic Craniopathy. Dr. Decamp has been practicing for over 50 years, and is a Chiropractic Neurologist in addition to being a Chiropractor and Craniopath.

Thought that you all might find it interesting.

THE BASIS OF CHIROPRACTIC CRANIOPATHY
O. Nelson DeCamp, D.C.
Diplomate Craniopath
Diplomate Chiropractic Neurologist

Chiropractic Craniopathy began its development in the 1920’s by M.B. Dejarnette, D.C., D.O. as Sacro Occipital Technique. It is based on Osteopathic Cranial Technique developed by W.O. Sutherland, D.O.. The Cranial-sacral respiratory phenomenon and its dysfunction was recognized in 1899 by Sutherland. He developed the applicable corrective technique and in 1939 published this in a small text “The Cranial Bowl”.

An excellent expanded text, “Osteopathy in the Cranial Field”, was written by H.I. Magoun, D.O. in 1966. During the period of craniopathy that these texts were the basis of Osteopathic Craniopathy, the emphasis was on the cranium and its correction. Not much was written or practiced relating to the causes and involvements of cranial dysfunction from the pelvic complex or patterns of postural compensations. Therefore, due to many de-compensational adverse reactions to cranial corrections and decreased osteopathic involvement and interest in spinal manipulation, Osteopathic craniopathic development and practice waned.

In 1983, John E. Upledger, D.O., produced the text “Craniosacral Therapy”. In this text, the previous Osteopathic manipulative cranial procedures were eliminated. Passive light touch and cranial rhythmic impulse energy balancing was developed so as to not upset patterns of compensational dysfunction which previously created adverse reactions in patients. This is presently being taught mainly to non-primary health care providers.

M.B. Dejarnette, D.C./D.O. had experienced craniopathic care as a student and was an avid proponent of the concepts. In personal conversations with him he stated, “I had experienced reactions to cranial corrections personally and was bound and determined to find a system of analysis and treatment to eliminate the reactions to cranial adjustments. Correcting the cranial function and releasing stress on the central nervous system is the ultimate goal in health.”

Dejarnette devoted his professional life to the development of Sacro Occipital technique. He produced yearly texts and taught seminars throughout the country from the late twenties til his last text in 1984. In 1968 he felt he had developed his system of analytic objective indicators for sacrum to occiput corrections, based on the cranial sacral respiratory system, to release cranial stress and began teaching craniopathy to the chiropractic profession. This included producing yearly cranial texts until 1980 and teaching until his death in 1992. His work continues to be taught by Sacro Occipital Research Society International (SORSI) that he founded to carry on his work.

Review of the Cranial Sacral Respiratory Function

The Brain is highly vulnerable to disturbance of the blood/CSF supply. The central nervous system, brain/spinal cord, use Oxygen and glycogen, and needed metabolic constituents, at a ratio of 7 to 3 to the other cells of the body. Anoxia lasting only seconds can cause neurological damage. Although the brain constitutes only 2% of the total weight of the body, it receives about 15% of the cardiac output and its oxygen is about 20% of that of the total body. Total blood flow to the brain is about 750-1000 ml/min. and flow per unit of mass of gray matter is about four times that of white matter. This blood flow feeds the CSF, which transports nutrients and oxygen to the brain cells and removes intercellular metabolic waste and is instrumental in maintaining the steady state of the nervous system.
Craniopathy is concerned with two physiological phenomena relating to the moving or pumping of the CSF through the central nervous system from the cranium to sacrum and back. These two phenomena are the cranial rhythmic impulse (CRI) and diaphragmatic - inter/intra cranial bone motion. The CRI is a very light impulse motion that develops in the fetus along with the cardiac impulse and persists through life with a normal rhythm of 8-12 cycles per minute. Although no specific impulse mechanism has been discovered or adequately explained, a couple have been hypothesized.

The CRI motion may be described as a flexion/extension torsional sensation along an axis from the left occipital/temporal suture to the right sphenomaxillary suture. There is a reciprocating temporal bone action with one temporal moving in external rotation and one in internal rotation thereby producing a clockwise eddying flow of CSF through the brain and spinal cord tissues.

This CRI pumping motion is not of high volume nor is its frequency variable sufficiently to maintain the flow of CSF needed for life’s extremes of metabolic demands on the central nervous system.

The second phenomena, diaphragmatic – inter/intra cranial bone motion, relates its motion cycle to that of the diaphragm on inhalation/exhalation at an average of 16-18 cycles per minute. This pumping motion is much greater then that of the CRI and can vary in volume and frequency as needed for the metabolic demands and cooling of the CNS.

On inhalation, the diaphragm contracts expanding the lung volume from inferior while skeletal muscles contract to elevate the rib cage in circumference. Some important primary muscles elevating the rib cage are the scalenus, sternocleidomastoideus (SCM), and trapezius.

The resultant contracture of these muscles on inhalation is extension of the occiput on the spine and flexion of the occipital/sphenoid junction (sphenobasilar) of the cranium. This in turn places the internal membranes, the falx cerebri from anterior to posterior and tentorium laterally, into an extension state.

If there is postural compensatory sub-occipital muscular imbalance, sutural fixation from trauma or stress, or dental bite imbalance, the distortion of cranial CRI and diaphragmatic pumping motion is impaired. The resultant impairment of blood and CSF flow can significantly affect the neurological cellular metabolic status. This then can cause additional compensatory patterns throughout the body to maintain the CNS. Many chiropractic spinal/pelvic problems can not be corrected sufficiently to the satisfaction of Dr. and patient because they are now compensatory to a cranial distortion or dysfunction which now requires correction.

Dejarnette developed SOT and Chiropractic Craniopathy as the analysis and treatment of the cranial sacral respiratory/CNS system that is an addition to any chiropractic technique. It greatly enhances all chiropractic techniques and is essential for those interested in expanding their practice in services, numbers, and retention by including 80% of the nervous system not usually treated.

Hi Everyone,

It's me again the craniosacral newbie. I've gotten a few more times to practice the balancing techniques I learned last month. I still don't feel any pulse or rhythm. The most I feel is a strange tingling or fluttering ever so often. The people I've worked on thus far feel heat and warmth from my hands coupled with what they say is a sense of relaxation and comfort. So I guess something is going on and it hasn't proved harmful to anyone.

The thing is, I keep getting impressions and it's trippy. I try not to make a big deal of it and I probably am not serving myself by writing about it, but it would feel comforting to know that others may have had a common experience. I worked on an acquaintence last night and as I worked names kept flowing through my consciousness. I did the CST as a free add-on after a massage so I felt at liberty to ask questions as part of my own training. I asked names and it turns out that the names I heard/saw were of people my client actually knew and with whom he had unresolved issues. I was making stuff up on the fly, and said that maybe at this time while he is in a relaxed state he can make the decision to examine his feelings/thoughts concerning those people, see whether or not those feelings serve him, and allow himself to let them go, if he is "ready".

I'd like to feel as if I'm doing craniosacral work, but it still smacks of energy work, the impressions are a little unsettling even for me, and I believe a lot of wacky stuff. I suppose the best I can do is keep reading and practicing. Has anybody else had strong impressions while working on clients. Please share your stories with me and what do you do about them? I don't think I'll share my impressions with every client, it seems like things could get sticky.

Craniosacral Balancing

I recently completed a 24 hour Craniosacral Balancing course in which I learned basic CS techniques. Throughout the class sessions I NEVER felt the PRR or anything as I worked on classmates. I know from feedback that they felt I helped facilitate the "work" and they expressed feeling sensations and benefits.

This passed weekend I got to work on a friend. Once again I felt nothing but she reported feeling sensations in the area I worked on 10-20 minutes after I stopped. So far I'm not too worried about feeling the pulse of the CSF, I'm confident that something is working. I do however have a couple of questions and/or observations.

1. I don't feel a pulse or rhythm but sometimes feel a tingling. Is this common in other people's experience?

2. How often and how long did you have to practice before feeling the pulse (if you had a hard time feeling it from the start)?

3. Do you find that it's easier to feel the pulse on certain people depending on how familiar you are with them? If that's the case I'll try to practice on close friends.

4. Though I felt nothing while working on my friend/co-worker, I did get an impression of a name while working on here Lamdoidal suture. I know people pick up energy while doing bodywork and I wonder how common is this for others? (I'm used to picking things up while massaging--it's just hard to grasp in regards to CS work.)

5. I feel like I'm doing CS work, but how much of CS work would you say is energy work or is it not easily separated?

Thanks in advance
-C

p.s.
I plan on taking a more in depth course when I have the funds.

Hello, All,

I just got it into my head that doing a cranial tour, wandering from city to city, around the country, doing a few days of cranial work in various locales, would be a fun thing to do. I have the vaguest idea of what this would entail and I was wondering if anyone else has done anything like this or know of something like this being done. Any info on this subject would be appreciated.

Much Love,
Dom

CV4 vs. EV4

Have been using CV4 for over a decade, so I feel very comfortable with it, but it so general that it does not always address the lesion I am working on. I have just started using the EV4 technique in the past year, and have found, for me at least, that it has a much wider range of effectiveness.

I have spoken to an osteopath, who has said that she has had the same experience, and to a massage therapist, who had no idea what I was talking about. Just wanted to hear from other practitioners out there: who uses both techniques and which has been found to be most effective.

G'day,

From what i understand everyone here knows each other, so i thought i would introduce myself here. My name is Dave, I have had abit of exposure to Cranial Sacral therapy, as well as reading my friends notes on Biocranial, which i really didn't understand very well but. As a guess i have given about 10 Cranial treatments undersupervision of my friend on her son after a motor acciendent. Supprising enought the hardesting thing i think i learnt was how to release the jaw, that was an intresting experince, well his jaw and teeth all lined up perfectly after.
The only real skills i have in the area and energy manipulation, breathwork and intutive bodywork. Anyway i love to learn new things.

Hope to learn along side you all.

Unconditional Love and Light
Dave

Long tide vs. Mid tide

I've found that I prefer working in mid-tide with moments of going into long tide. It takes a lot more effort for me to get into that long tide space, though once I'm there it's easy to stay there. Any one else have thoughts on this?
